James Winkfield | 80
James Winkfield came to the Bay Area from Arkansas as a small child with his parents. He now lives in a building for older adults and those with disabilities and he is blind from progressive glaucoma. He has worked for the teamsters, and later in services for people with hearing impairment. He got interested in working with the deaf community because of his mother, who worked at the California School for the Deaf. He talks about discrimination against people who are deaf, and witnessing the early days of the AIDS epidemic taking people he knew, including a coworker.
